There is a meter that you speak of ... it's on the gas pump. I calculate my mileage every time I fill up. When my mileage drops below 50 mpg, I know it's time to investigate filters and spark plugs. As a daily motorcycle commuter, I am shocked that people pay $85+ to go the same distance that costs me $12. I have a sedan (that fits my family of 4 +1) and we generally plan out weekly trips. I have a crappy $800 van that I've owned for 5 plus years. It's function is to haul my beekeeping gear or supplies for various projects. My insurance costs are minimal as I purchased all of these vehicles either salvage, or with mechanical problems that I put my own parts and labor into. If I lost one, they are easy enough to replace in this disposable society. Sometimes your outlook on life is very frustrating to me, but in this, I think we find a lot of common ground.
