Day 10, Dragon*Con to-do

Tonight I am going to brainstorm my pre-Dragon*Con plans into 750W. I know this isn't "Writing", per se, but it's a good excuse to get this list done sooner rather than later.

Find a hotel room. This is a little harder than usual this year, since I've got a companion who needs something slightly softer and/or cleaner to sleep on than my usual place (that being a row of chairs above a puddle of booze in a party room). I'm actually considering finding friends with a spare bed and paying for 25-50% of a room for 3 or 4 nights, which would be a first for me at D*C.

Upgrade my toys. My gloves are getting old and busted, and my TENS needs a little TLC. I am going to get two new pairs of gloves and hack together at least one fully working pair from the ~7 half-working gloves I have sitting around, probably with a big battery pack instead of the default ones. I want some new electrodes for my TENS, including some clamps and some insertables. At long last, I'm expanding my electrical toy repertoire to include a violet wand, probably the Master Kit from drclockwork.com. Also, I need to organize and arrange all of my rope, and get some more colored nylon or hemp for decorative work.

Get some time off work. My schedule is finalized for the near future, Sun-Thu 5P-2A. Labor Day is a holiday at work, which I can probably get off. I'll have one vacation day by then, which I can probably use for Sunday. I may have one or two floating holidays to use up by the end of the year, which I would spend on Tuesday (after con) and/or Thursday (during con).

Update my list of photo shoot locations. A lot of them are still the same, but a lot have changed. There's a new skywalk, some new gardens, different plants and signage in a few places. I have more or less access to different parts of different buildings, including some rooftops.

Claim some Tech Ops shifts. They are cutting it awfully late on opening up the shift grid this year, so it's going to be a race for the choice shifts. I hope I'm awake and alert when the time comes. The are a few panels I'd really like to be working, if only for the company.

Prepare to give a panel on the Makerbot, RepRap, and 3d fabrication in general. Myself and a couple of other folks from Freeside are going to pimp the space in the guise of talking about all of the cool automated fabrication equipment we have and are building. Our Makerbot is running better than ever, and RepRap should be up and running by con.

Prepare to move. This isn't D*C-specific, but the timeframes overlap. My lease is up some time between Oct 1 and Nov 30 (have to clarify that with the landlord, our copy is lost somewhere in the apartment), and I've got a new place lined up. I can afford both, and the new one is in a MUCH more convenient location (closer to Freeside, CoLab, and MARTA, and by connection to MARTA also effectively closer to work and just about everywhere else), so I'm going to make the transition sooner rather than later. I could be moving as early as the weekend before D*C, likely no later than two weeks after.

Solve this "problem". This isn't anything close to urgent, but it's always something that would be convenient to have out of the way before a huge social engagement where it's likely to be an issue, which includes most of the big and/or party conventions that I attend. If there's any progress on this front, you'll be the fifth to know :)

Think of some ways to surprise [livejournal.com profile] kdsorceress , since this is her first D*C and obviously she won't be overwhelmed nearly enough by just that. I know you're reading this, don't expect spoilers :-p

Build something really tech/geeky to wear as a pseudo-costume. This depends mostly on budget and willpower. Ideas range from something as simple as a retroreflective shield (which will break the exposure settings for any photos I'm in), to a laser POV projector, to a transforming costume. I also want to expand on the photo/tablet system I had a few years ago, because getting digital signatures from celebrities was kinda neat (but still not worth standing in any lines, which is my #1 rule about D*C).
