So, today gets a mostly boring post, and you have to click the cut for anything less boring. It was my first day at the new job (with Peer1) and, despite being rather boring, I learned a lot.
I learned that the actual work part of the job is pretty much exactly what I expected. I can give thanks for that to a thorough recruiter and hiring/interview process. I got a tour of the building, met a bunch of folks in my department and others, and learned a lot more about how the company operates. My trainers were two[1] more experienced guys with mostly the same job as I will have. I learned a lot about internal processes and systems, how some bits of the everyday parts of the job fit together, etc.
I learned that the benefits package is a LOT better than I was led to believe. Knowing what I know now, and not foreseeing any major plan-derailing changes, I don't think any other job that I'm expecting offers for could drag me away. They offer a decent amount of tuition reimbursement, and non-tuition job-specific training reimbursement (mostly certification classes, I expect). They help pay for my gym membership, and buy me a MARTA pass since I don't drive. Their vacation allotment is rather generous, with a good holiday schedule (that will mostly just mean some double-time days for me, since it's a 24/7 call center). Their employee referral program is astonishingly generous, so if anyone out there is looking for work and has razor sharp Windows sysadmin skills (the Linux positions are all filled up now) then get in touch with me ASAP!
On the long list of other unexpected bonuses... they give us crazy cheap soda machines, and a pretty awesome break room to boot (MAME cabinet, Wii, pool table, stocked kegerator). The atmosphere seems very casual, with plenty of friendly banter and chat (not necessarily of the water cooler variety) to be had. Everyone that I met seemed at least mostly friendly[2]. I actually know someone who works there already, and have 2-degree connections to another handful of folks through convention and IT circles around Atlanta.
And, in less boring news... There could be another wrinkle in my slowly developing poly circle of lady friends. She knows about everyone else and is OK with it, and shares my thoughts on appropriate behavior when going out together in private or public. Apparently I'm interesting enough to keep around for more than one day at the lake, and the feeling is quite mutual. More to come on that front in the near future.
[1] Two because my "normal daytime hours" training shift doesn't actually line up with anyone else's work schedule.
[2] Could be due to Newbie Day being planned to coincide with Free Donuts and Bagels Day.
