I was driving down the street (Ponce, near Briarcliff) on my scooter and someone going the opposite way flicked a cigarette out the window that hit me in the arm. Imagine my disgust and annoyance (imagine if it hit me in the face...). Now, what might be an appropriate response to this? I was considering picking it up, turning around, and throwing it back in their window, or possibly throwing something equally nasty (to them, as their cigarette was to me) in. Thoughts?

it was not intentional. I try carefully not to throw my cigarette butt out the window when the is a bike near by..but sometimes it can not be avoided. It is just one of the hazards for riding a scooter.

You have got to be kidding. Please tell me this was sarcasm.

Nope not kidding. I don't think anyone would intentionally flick a cigarette butt at you. The fact that they are not aware of their surroundings makes them ass. But seriously, you can not assume they run around flicking cigarette butts at people. BY the same token....It is a risk one take on a scooter or motorcycle. LIKE I SAID. It does not make it right. I try to be careful not to do it when there is a motorcycle/scooter around me. But you can't completely flip out because it happened to you. It's one of the risks.

How about you never flick cigarettes out your window at all?

Not gonna happen..but so you know my cigarettes are organic and they do biodegrade quicker than commercial brands. Sorry your irritated that not everyone agrees with you. Adversity is a tool for learning.

This is exactly the sort of thinking that spurs me to throw it back into their vehicle. I think maybe it's time I started doing that. The scooter gives me the mobility and flexibility to reach down and get them, and to avoid being in an unwanted safety situation if the driver of the car tries to get physical.

Your way out of line.
#1. I am not in anyway being rude to you.
#2. I have looked over my comments and no seriously,I am not being rude to you.
#3. The out to get you mentality is not a good place to be in your head. You might want to think about it.
#4. Your over reacting and holding a grudge to something that was just an accident.
#5 Your contemplating putting yourself in a dangerous situation by planning on over reacting if it happens again to you in the future.
NOW don't take this the wrong way but--- are you bipolar? Because all my bipolar friends are freaking out this week over little shit. Maybe it was a sign for you to get a face guard on your helmet.
We all have to live in this world together. And not everyone's habit is going to fit together with everyones lifestyle. It's called the world,life..letting things go and moving on will better suit your heart , health,and mind...then THIS

A face guard on my helmet is not going to prevent me getting burns on my arm. You throwing burning refuse out of your car (and that is exactly what it is) is the problem, and apparently nothing short of radical counteraction is going to change your mind.

WHAT DID I SAY LIKE SEVERAL TIMES--THAT PERSON WAS ASS FOR NOT BEING AWARE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS..I on the other hand TRY to make sure there is not a motorcycle around me before tossing a cigarette if I have to do so..In turn your attacking me for not doing the very thing that this person did---just because I said sometimes it can't be helped. Do you feel better yet?

Your comment may be of interest, but since you don't know when to use "you're" instead of "your", I know better than to read it.

You just lost the meta-argument.

Hey, just wondering if you've got a source on the your vs you're debate online. Google didn't give me anything except guides as to how to distinguish between them. If there's been a radical shift, I'd love to see it.

they are littering besides almost giving you a nasty burn. i hate smokers that act filthy like that.

as a smoker I am always very careful to watch for who's around me when I throw a butt out the window, I think it is very fair to throw something back at them. People need to pay attention, they are already breaking the law throwing it out the window in the first place.

You're one of the smartest propel I know. But think of it this way;
car=3000 lbs.
You+scooter= 350lbs approx.
In all honesty I wouldn't risk it. Lord knows I would want to do the same thing if I was in your helmet. But this may be a fight worth walking away from

Smokers are so fucking disgusting. Fuck your arm, what about the environment? Don't do anything back to them, I don't need you getting run over or shot in the face. I can't pay the rent by myself.

Hello,

The enviromental argument against smokers is pretty weak. Consider all of the other things in this world that we accept that inflict far more damage to the enviroment, like scooters.

Regardless, I wish the smoker had been far more careful with his cigarette butt.

Eric

I used to ride my bicycle around DC a ton while I was in college. One day I had an ass in a small pickup cut me off and send me into the curb. Damned near killed me. I got lucky and was able to stay on the bike and not ditch. The bastard stopped at a light a couple blocks down and with all the effort I could muster I sped up like hell. As I passed him I put out my right foot and smashed off his drivers side mirror. Took the next corner and slipped down a few side streets but I don't think he ever pursued me.

Not your situation but I understand the frustration. However, had I taken a moment to think I'd have just let it go. See [livejournal.com profile] eternalredneck's math above. I got lucky.

Generally, it's not worth getting too worked up over or doing anything in retaliation.

As a general rule, I assume smokers are dumb and inconsiderate, for obvious reasons.

I would record the guy's license plate and reported him to the police. I know several motorcyclists that have been in serious accidents that were caused by cigarette butts thrown out of the window.

I've also heard of cases where the butts flew into open windows of other cars as well.

Not only that, there was also the possibility of the butt causing a fire had it landed in the grass. Luckily we have had a pretty wet summer, so the possibility was a small one, but it was there.
