sparrI'm going to start fresh with a mostly-empty profile and see what that does. For posterity and future reference, here's my entirely unsuccessful profile as it's evolved over the last few years:
My self-summary
I am a maker, geek, utilitarian, and rationalist. My jokes tend toward wordplay and my leisure time towards innovative, crafty, or distracting pursuits.
Getting to know people by way of activities is ideal for me. Let's go out and do something interesting and exciting rather than just sit around at a bar or coffee shop.
What I’m doing with my life
My day job usually involves computer server administration and software development. I also do electronics design,software development, and 3D printing for fun, and would like to turn some of that into a business. I'm spending a lot of time at Artisan's Asylum exploring my creative hobbies, including woodworking,metalworking, welding, and some other crafts.
I’m really good at
puzzles, games, math, origami, procedural art, shibari, logic,debate, asynchronous and multithreaded conversations, tying my shoes
The first things people usually notice about me
There is usually something witty and/or geeky written on my shirt. Possibly an xkcd comic, origami diagram, or technology-oriented company logo.
Favorite books, movies, shows, music, and food
Books: internally consistent hard science fiction, most of the works of David Weber, John Ringo, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke
Movies: Primer, Watchmen, Shawshank Redemption
TV Shows: Firefly, Law and Order, Boardwalk Empire
Comics: xkcd, Penny Arcade, Oglaf

Out with friends at a party or cookout, or home playing video games, somewhere else playing board games, doing freelance computer programming, hanging out at Artisan's Asylum which is Somerville's local makerspace, or any of a dozen other things. I don't really do "typical".
